Our mind experiences Reality in three-dimensional time. Past, present, and future coexist and constitute an integrated whole. Never before in the history of humanity has our vision of the past had the breadth we enjoy today. Nor have our past projections of the future been sufficient to create and calculate the scenarios that are yet to come. Likewise, never before has our present had such a broad scope as the one now presented to us, so full of rich and intense experiences, so explained and outlined by so many doctrines and theories that often coexist antagonistically. This triple temporal dimension, this "trikala," if I may use the Sanskrit word for it, has not, however, produced an equivalent expansion of meaning in human life. The expansion of the trikala of our era manifests itself as the accumulation and wild repetition of old routines. There is an accumulation of material and abstract objects that has resulted in a chaos of meaning. The result of the expansion of our experience has not been a human being with broader perspectives and existential visions. In fact, the lack of harmony has generated greater anxiety and suffering. Daily dissatisfaction has grown, burdened and spurred by this general lack of meaning in life. Ignorance, which once found solace in religion or merely in the warmth of a social group, is now a cold stage for a mechanical, exhausting, and cruel life.
To reach one's full potential, humans must begin by understanding the sphere of their own trikala, the scope of their understanding of the world in terms of the past and the future, in order to reexamine their own assessments and those of their society. Knowing oneself must begin with understanding the identity of our group. The language in which we think about ourselves was not individually developed: the image I have constructed of myself was made with the words and emotions of others. Philosophical mentoring allows us to enter into this understanding of trikala. This understanding makes us human beings with firmer and deeper roots, stronger to live in the midst of human chaos, and more compassionate toward others.
A mentor is a pathfinder and a signpost on your personal path. He or She does not walk ahead of you leading you to their private world. Your mentor follows closely behind, but the path is always yours. A mentor is not a guru, nor a simple teacher. Their teachings are felt and lived in their own lives, and that's why they can inspire such passion in you. A mentor is an initiator in the Perennial Tradition of master philosophers, of true lovers of wisdom. Such tradition is ancient and exists equally in all parts of the world under different names.
A mentor will always speak to you based on your level of mental and emotional development, respecting your evolutionary process as an individual being.
