Oscar E. Muñoz, Ph.D.: Guiding Thought for a Deeper Life
Dr. Oscar E. Muñoz is a passionate philosopher with a unique blend of academic rigor and practical insight, dedicated to helping individuals navigate life's complexities through the power of philosophical thought. Holding two doctorates—one in Philosophy from UNED (Spain), awarded "Cum laude by unanimity", and another from Princeton University (USA) in Romance Languages with a focus on Philosophical Aesthetics and Onto-Epistemology —Dr. Muñoz brings a rich, interdisciplinary perspective to his mentorship.
His extensive academic background includes a Master's in Romance Philology and Literatures from Princeton, a Philosophy degree from UNED, and studies in Fine Arts (Music Composition) with Morton Feldman at the State University of New York at Buffalo. This diverse educational journey, complemented by early studies in Economic Sciences, provides him with a broad intellectual canvas from which to draw.
For over two decades, Dr. Muñoz has been a dedicated educator and mentor. He served as a Professor in the Department of Psychology and Humanities at Schellhammer Business School, where he taught nine distinct humanities courses and directed 17 master's theses. His teaching experience also includes roles as an Instructor at Princeton University(Romance Languages Department) and UNED (Philosophy Department). Since 2003, he has been a private mentor in Philosophy, Grammar, and Mathematics.
Beyond the classroom, Dr. Muñoz is a prolific author and speaker, with numerous publications spanning philosophical aesthetics, onto-epistemology, philosophical anthropology, literary criticism, and poetry. He has delivered impactful conferences at prestigious institutions like the University of Oxford, the University of Oviedo, the University of Granada, UNED, Pacific Northwest University, and the University of West Georgia, exploring themes such as myth, history, the sacred, personal identity, and the aesthetics of narrative.
Dr. Muñoz's mentorship is grounded in the belief that philosophy is not just an academic pursuit but a powerful tool for personal growth and understanding. Whether you seek clarity in complex decisions, a deeper understanding of fundamental questions, or guidance in navigating existential challenges, Dr. Muñoz offers a unique and enriching philosophical mentorship experience.
Philosophical mentoring doesn't have a single approach. Nor does philosophy, to the dismay of contemporary science and artificial intelligences that seek to dissolve its complexity in childish accusations of subjectivism. My approach isn't unique. In fact, what I teach has been taught for thousands of years and in many different places. Its value is precisely that: it's not personal, but it's not objective either. We call "objective knowledge" the result of social consensus; important for organizing practical life, but they are basically formalizations, not the definitive expression of the way things are. Wisdom is transpersonal, and my approach to philosophy is based on that transpersonality, which is that of the human psyche.
For those approaching philosophical mentoring for the first time, I would like to paint a picture of it like a Suni-e painting:
It is a profound form of human relationship: it is a perennial transmission of knowledge, not just mental (although it entails mastery of the mind), in order to live from there a deliberate life of enthusiasm. It entails ongoing creative actions that unite our volitional impulses with our emotional and intellectual ones.
What will I find in philosophical mentoring?
What you already have but don't know you have.
Let me be clearer and tell you what you won't find:
You won't find a mechanical method for solving your problems that works as a recipe. Your problems will vanish in due time, and they will do so in two phases: first, your understanding of the content and scale of the problem will change; then, alchemically, when your lead turns to gold, it will no longer be exactly a problem (although gold can become one, of a different kind).
I hope that little by little you will master the art of metaphor as well as that of logic, and stop thinking the way the social machine has taught you. Philosophical mentoring will help you clear your mind, which means clearing your world and watching it transform. Many practical advantages arise from this, more than one would initially imagine.
You can also use mentoring in a simpler way and propose topics that are of particular interest to you. In these cases, we can address them in a more formal manner, such as a private course, or, if you prefer, with a group of people who are also interested in the topic. Some of the areas I have taught over the years are structured into the "Aurora" education project, which appears in the menu of this website and at this link.
Don't hesitate to write to me with any questions or concerns. You can also find some FAQs HERE.
Our philosophical mentorship sessions are designed to be flexible and tailored to your needs. Each session runs for approximately 50 minutes and is conducted conveniently online via Google Meet. I'll provide the secure link for each call.
The topics we explore are entirely up to you, the mentee. There's no prior knowledge of philosophy required; these sessions are for anyone curious to delve deeper into philosophical inquiry.
You can choose between individual or group sessions, depending on your preference. While individual mentorship is highly recommended for personalized guidance, group sessions (limited to a maximum of five people) are specifically suggested for those participating in our announced "Aurora" courses.
The frequency of sessions is flexible and set by you, the mentee. For optimal benefit, we recommend a minimum of two sessions per month.
